Course Overview:

Understanding dental anatomy and physiology is essential for dental assistants. This MicroLearning explores the structures, functions, and development of the oral cavity and teeth, providing foundational knowledge for chairside procedures and clinical practice. It examines the different types of teeth, how they form, and the functions of each tooth. It explores the dentitions, occlusion, and malocclusion, and introduces the most common tooth numbering systems used in dentistry. There are interactive charting activities that allow learners to apply the information from this lesson in simulated clinical scenarios.

Heather McIlvoy is a dental assistant Program Director and Distance Education Coordinator in Post-Secondary Education. She received her Registered Dental Assistant certification with AMT in 2019. Over the last 3 years, Heather has worked as an accreditation evaluator for a national healthcare school accrediting bureau and has acted as a member of the Subject Matter Expert Committee for AMT. She is an integral member of the compliance committee at the institution she works at. Heather became an Expanded Duty Dental Assistant (EDDA) in 2011. She worked in General Dentistry and Pediatric Dentistry before becoming an educator. Currently, Heather is finishing up her Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Administration. She loves working in Higher Education and has special interests in compliance, curriculum design, and improving Dental Assisting education.
