Fundamentals for Medical Laboratory Scientists: All Modules (Bulk)
Fundamentals for Medical Laboratory Scientists is a review course to help individuals prepare for the Medical Laboratory Scientist Certification Examination. This course includes an introduction module and nine content modules.
Note: Each content module contains knowledge checks, a quiz, resources, and references. Modules do not need to be completed in one sitting.
Module 0: Introduction
This module reviews how to navigate the course, describes the module structure, and lists other resources to prepare for the Medical Laboratory Scientist certification exam.
Module 1: General Laboratory
This module is separated into two parts.
- Part A - Foundations of Clinical Laboratory Practice: Reviews laboratory quality principles, laws and regulations, instrumentation, maintenance, operation principles, lab mathematics, and lab safety standards.
- Part B - Specimen Collection and Handling: Reviews procedures to maintain specimen integrity for blood and non-blood specimens, proper order of draw, and causes of erroneous results.
Module 2: Professional Communication and Conduct
This module reviews operation and maintenance of clinical chemistry instruments, renal/hepatic function tests, carbohydrate metabolism, protein analysis, enzyme assays, endocrine tests, lipid metabolism, fluid/electrolyte balance, acid-base balance, cerebrospinal fluid collection, and other chemistry procedures.
Module 3: Hematology
This module reviews blood anatomy/physiology, principles and procedures for red/white blood cells and platelets, special tests, instrumentation, and preventative maintenance.
Module 4: Coagulation and Hemostasis
This module reviews hemostasis mechanisms, hemostatic disorders, and related tests and procedures.
Module 5: Immunology and Serology
This module reviews immunology and serology principles, syphilis and serological tests, immunology/serology procedures, and special tests.
Module 6: Immunohematology
This module reviews blood group systems, antigens/antibodies, immune response, immunoglobulin classes, pretransfusion testing, and hemolytic disease of the fetus/newborn (HDFN).
Module 7: Blood Banking and Transfusion
This module reviews blood banks, regulatory roles, blood collection/donation, blood component prep, storage/labeling, special patient considerations, and therapeutic phlebotomy.
Module 8: Microbiology
This module reviews bacteriology (media, cultures, identification, special tests), virology, parasitology, mycology, and microbiology quality control.
Module 9: Urinalysis and Body Fluids
This module reviews renal system anatomy/physiology, urine specimen collection/processing, physical/chemical/microscopic/confirmatory analysis, and special testing methods for urinalysis and body fluids.
