STEP 505: A Case of Dientamoebiasis (CE: 1.0)
Article Overview:
Despite having been identified over 100 years ago, the complete life cycle of Dientamoeba fragilis is still a work in progress. Historically, it was believed that this organism did not have a cyst form but recently researchers have proven that it does have a cyst form. With so few organisms being seen in the traditional permanent slide preparations, the molecular method, RT-PCR, has now become the method of choice for identification since it is 100% sensitive and specific.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify different modes of transmission for Dientamoeba fragilis
- Discuss two different testing methods used to identify Dientamoeba fragilis
- Differentiate the trophozoite form from the precyst/cyst form of the parasite
- List different treatment options for Dientamoeba fragilis
